Eucalyptus and pine species have been widely used in reforestation programs in many parts of the country. There is a widespread popular opinion that these exotic species, particular the eucalypts, use too much water. The objective of this study has been to determine the dry season water consumption of Eucalyptus and pine plantations, using the soil water budget technique. Data analysed included two years of precipitation measurements, and two years of monthly soil water measurement using the neutron scattering method. The analysis of the annual range of soil water in eucalypt, pine, and also in a plot containing natural herbaceous vegetation did not show any significant difference in soil water regime among these vegetation covers. For the dry period of May through September, 1974, the estimated values of evapotranspiration were as follows: eucalypt,106,3 mm; pine, 211,5mm; herbaceous vegetation, 195,9mm. Collectively, the results permitted the conclusion that there were no adverse effects on the soil water regime that could be ascribed to the plantation of eucalypt or pine, as compared with that observed for the natural herbaceous vegetation. |
